Preparing Planting Season
Yayyy so glad I got the soil, compost and mulch already in october! Now it was so easy to start :)
ADHD Seed Organizing
Organizing my seeds today, so satisfying!
I sort the seeds by month. That makes it easier for me to keep track of what to sow. Sorting by alphabet is more common, but I like to give my brain the peace to just think about the sowing dates once.
Of course some crops are going to be sown more than once. In that case I will put the seed packages to the next month directly after I finish the first sowing.
To further optimize this setup I'd like to craft dividers for each month or even planting date. The golden clips are cute, but probably it's more accessible to just be able to grab one pack of seeds whithout having to put all of them back together.
Here a small garden update:
Also, I ordered a wired shelf yesterday to finish my super fancy indoor kitchen gardening area *_*

Growing Ginger
Step 1: buy organic ginger (should be juicy and with many "eyes")
Step 2: soak ginger in warm water overnight
Step 3: put the ginger in a ziplock bag with a wet paper towel, put it in a box (ginger likes it dark to sprout) and put the box in a warm place
Step 4: let it rest, check it once a week and remove mold if necessary
Step 5: after 4-6 weeks transfer in a transparent container (I put some fleece inside to keep it moist)
I also cut the big rhizome in smaller pieces
A warm place with some sun is ideal. It can stay there until I have some space to put potted ginger (hopefully my wired shelf will be here soon).
I would really like to brew some ginger beer this autum °_°

Recipe - Anis Quitten Plätzchen
My new favourite cookies with anise and quince :3
- 250g spelt flour / Dinkelmehl
- 50g starch / Speisestärke
- 1 Egg or vegan flax egg (1 tbsp ground raw flaxseeds, 3tbsp water) / Ei oder Leinsamenei
- 150g sugar / Zucker
- 200g vegan butter / Alsan
- 1-2 tbsp freshly ground anise / Anis, gemahlen
- a bit of lemon zest / etwas Zitronenschale
- 200g warm quince jelly / Quittengelee, warm
Combine everything (except the quince jelly) to a dough and put it in the fridge for minimum 1 hour or overnight. Now you can roll out the dough and cut out the cookies. Use some extra flour and if the dough gets too sticky either cool it again or add more flour or both :)
Now you can bake your cookies at 170°C until they turn a bit golden in the edges (around 7 minutes but depends on the oven).
Divide the cookies into two batches. Use a teaspoon or a baking brush to generously spread the jelly on the first half. The cookies can still be warm, but pls be careful to not burn your fingers. Place the other cookies on top to create cute little sandwiches. Now you can sift a mixture of powdered sugar and ground anise over the top.
If possible let them rest one day, the taste will be even better ^_^
Rain Gutter Grow System
After watching ALL the youtube videos and drafting a lot of gardening options for our small backyard, I might have found the ideal solution for now. There are so many cool growing setups like flood and drain tables, dutch buckets, wicking beds and various hydroponic solutions. It is a real challenge to keep it simple, but let's hope this blog post will remind me to focus on whats important.
What I want: Soil (because in the long run I want to design a circular system using homemade organic compost instead of store bought fertilizers - which saves a lot of energy), Accessibility (for me that means easy to maintain, it should be possible to forget stuff without killing all the plants, aesthetically pleasing, quiet, as automated as possible), Affordability (no unnecessary fancyness, long term usability, modularity), Water Efficiency (I want to collect and use rainwater without depending on electricity, so it needs to be a gravity fed system). Thats how I ended up planning a rain gutter grow system with float boxes and also two wicking beds that will also get their own float valves. No youtuber did it the way I plan it now, so I'm very excited how the setup will work :)
Autumn Glamping
Cute date idea:
bonus: bring a hot water bottle, cozy blankets, battery powered fairy lights and hot chocolate
be careful with fire, especially if the weather is dry. and bring a trash bag :)
Pigments *_*
My father and I visited a very special very nerdy store today. They produce pigments in their own mill and they really have ALL the colors.

Idea: Interviews
I know so many people with amazing skills working on their projects, maybe I'll start interviewing them and publish the interviews here. Who wants to be the first? What would be good questions? It would be great if that project also connects people and helps to build solidarity networks.

What is copyleft?
"Copyleft is a method of making intellectual property reusable and modifiable without any restrictions, except that anything new produced using the original asset must also be available freely. This can apply to everything from works of art to software."
Urban Composting
Here's my first small project: How to compost in a small backyard space without spending a lot of money :3
- ask your housemates if they are cool with having a compost in the backyard
- decide which kind of composting container you want to use (I use a 60L plastic felt potato bag, it's cheap, pretty and you can easily access the compost soil)
- learn about greens and browns aka nitrogen and carbon sources for happy compost microbes
- I try a mix of around 1/3 greens and 2/3 browns
- also important: aeration and hydration (the mixture should be as wet as a wrung out sponge)
